The science of architecture: Gehry building to provide distinctive home for Lewis library

Those who have watched its bold, curved stainless steel roofline emerge on the corner of Washington Road and Ivy Lane no doubt believe the Lewis Science Library designed by Frank Gehry will have a distinctive exterior look.

A recent tour of the building’s yet unfinished rooms and halls shows an interior to match: glass walls jut down from the ceiling to create an enclosed area surrounded by an atrium; an opening between two floors appears in the shape of a star; large, adjacent walls are painted in such colors as bright blue, orange and chartreuse.

Alan Stahl Named a Guggenheim Fellow for 2008

Alan Stahl, the Library’s Curator of Numismatics, has been named a Guggenheim Fellow for 2008 as one of only 190 recipients from a pool of 2,600 applicants. The award from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation carries support for research for Stah’s next book project, The Nexus of Wealth and Power in Medieval Venice. Stahl plans to use the grant for six months of research in the Venetian archives to investigate the relationship of the rise of capitalism and the maintenance of republican government in fourteenth-century Venice. In order to keep the Princeton Numismatic Collection open for use by students and visitors during the academic year, Stahl plans to carry out the research during summer and winter breaks. The awards are given to scholars, scientists and artists who demonstrate “stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment,” according to a statement from the Foundation.

Latin Orient Collection of Coins of Medieval Greek

The Latin Orient Collection of coins of medieval Greece, comprising more than eight hundred coins minted in the eastern Mediterranean following the fall of Constantinople to the armies of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 was acquired by Princeton’s Numismatic Collection in collaboration with the Program in Hellenic Studies and the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund.
The collection is especially rich in coins minted in the eastern Mediterranean that imitate the important trade coins of Italian cities, especially those of Venice and Naples. While late Byzantine issues are well represented in many public collections, until now there been no specialized collection of the coins of the Greek lands of the later Middle Ages available for study in a public institution. It is expected that study of these coins will shed light on how the Eastern Mediterranean economy functioned in the course of the 13th and the 14th centuries.
